Can You Submit Your MTD Year-End Tax Return with flonancial?

Yes, flonancial includes the supported Making Tax Digital year-end tax return for straightforward sole-trader and UK-property cases.

This matters because some search results and older software-listing snapshots can make it look as if flonancial only handles quarterly updates. That is no longer the full picture. Flonancial's mandatory MTD lane is built around two free jobs: sending quarterly updates during the tax year, then submitting the supported year-end tax return after the tax year has ended.

The short answer

Flonancial is suitable for a straightforward individual who has self-employment or UK property income, uses standard quarterly periods, keeps spreadsheet records, and is within the simple route flonancial supports.

It is not a full Self Assessment product for every possible income source, relief, charge or complex case. If your return needs something outside flonancial's supported lane, the year-end flow is designed to stop and divert you before submission.

What the year-end tax return does

HMRC says Making Tax Digital for Income Tax still has one tax return every tax year. Quarterly updates are summaries of your self-employment or property income and expenses. The year-end tax return is where the full year is checked and finalised.

For the first MTD year, 2026/27, the year-end tax return deadline is 31 January 2028. Before that tax return can be submitted, the required quarterly updates for the year must be sent.

What flonancial supports

Flonancial's current supported lane is intentionally narrow:

  • individual taxpayers, not agents;
  • sole-trader self-employment and UK property income;
  • standard update periods;
  • ordinary income and ordinary allowable expenses;
  • annual turnover or income below £90,000 per source; and
  • spreadsheet records selected in the browser.

For that lane, flonancial handles the core MTD journey: spreadsheet-based quarterly updates, receipts, the supported year-end tax return journey, HMRC's calculation and the final submission.

What is still in development

HMRC's Software Choices page for flonancial now shows many wider year-end rows as In development. HMRC defines that status as the software provider having committed to build the feature in time for the 2026 to 2027 tax return.

Examples include UK interest, PAYE employment, private pension income, private pension contributions, charitable giving, Student Loan, Marriage Allowance and the High Income Child Benefit Charge. These are year-end tax-return items. They do not belong in the quarterly spreadsheet update.

Why some rows are not marked Ready now

MTD tax return support is not one single button. HMRC has separate routes and checks for different income sources, reliefs, charges and adjustments. A simple sole-trader return is not the same as a return with employment, pensions, savings, Gift Aid, Child Benefit charges, partnership income or capital gains.

That is why flonancial can support the simple mandatory lane while still showing wider rows as in development. The honest split is better for users than pretending every possible tax return is already covered.

What happens if your return is outside the lane?

The year-end flow asks about your circumstances before submission. If your tax return needs a source or relief flonancial does not yet support, it should not try to submit a partial return. You will need to use HMRC online services, another compatible product or an accountant for that wider year-end step.

Your quarterly updates still matter. They are part of your MTD record for the year, even if your final year-end return needs a wider route.

The practical takeaway

If your MTD case is straightforward, flonancial is designed to take you from spreadsheet quarterly updates through to the supported year-end tax return, free of charge. If your personal tax return has wider income or reliefs, keep those records carefully and check whether the relevant feature is ready before you finalise.

Why is flonancial free? What's the catch?

There isn't one. Your spreadsheet is parsed in your browser, the file never touches our servers. HMRC's API is free to use. We never see your individual transactions or bank details, we don't sell your information, and we don't show you ads. The mandatory MTD pieces, quarterly updates and the year-end tax return, will always be free.
